GISCI Celebrates Exceptional Cartographic Talent: Announcing the 2024 Map Contest Winners
Des Plaines, IL (June 12, 2024) — The 2024 GISCI Map Contest concluded with resounding success, showcasing the world's finest cartographic achievements. Participants worldwide poured their creativity and expertise into crafting maps that captivated and inspired. This year, the contest witnessed an unprecedented level of engagement, with a record-breaking 60 submissions across two categories: professional and student.
"We are thrilled to celebrate the outstanding achievements of this year's map contest participants," said Tony Spicci, GISP CGMP, Executive Director of GIS Certification Institute (GISCI). "Each entry demonstrated remarkable skill, innovation, and dedication to the craft of cartography."
Entries spanned a diverse array of subjects and styles, reflecting the rich tapestry of the global geographic community. From intricate visualizations of pedestrian crash data to evocative representations of natural wonders, the creativity on display was truly awe-inspiring.
A distinguished panel of GISPs rigorously evaluated each submission based on seven criteria: accuracy, design/layout, legibility, visual appeal, effective communication, effective use of geographic information, and originality. After careful deliberation, the following winners emerged:
Professional Category:
- 1st Place: Anna Riling, for her compelling visualization of Bicycle and Pedestrian Crashes.
- 2nd Place: Luis Méndez, for his captivating portrayal of the Pearl Islands.
- 3rd Place: Kinga Stryszowska-Hill, for her insightful map, "Women PhDs are a Rare Find."
Student Category:
- 1st Place: Soki Kimura, for the breathtaking "Map of the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji."
- 2nd Place: Melinda Felicia Lowe, for her enchanting depiction of Dominica - The Nature Island of the Caribbean.
- 3rd Place: Ian Bohachek, for his thought-provoking exploration, "Is Tornado Alley Shifting East?"
In recognition of their outstanding achievements, winners received prestigious awards, including waived GISP certification fees. Moreover, participants earned points in the Contribution to the Profession category of their GISP Portfolio, acknowledging their valuable contributions to the field of GIS.
Furthermore, maps created using Esri software will be prominently featured at the 2024 Esri International User Conference in San Diego, CA, further amplifying the recognition of these exceptional works.
